During the month of December, second grade students from each of the elementary schools in Elmore County had an opportunity to gather to celebrate their accomplishments of the Hands-on Liberty Program at Wetumpka High School. Throughout this engaging 10-week program that the students participated in, they had meaningful lessons and activities designed to help them better understand civics, character, financial literacy, and social studies.

During the celebration, students selected local heroes who demonstrated the qualities of outstanding citizens, such as kindness, courage, leadership, and service to others. Each student read a thoughtfully written essay aloud from the stage, explaining why their chosen hero was deserving of recognition. Afterward, students presented their heroes with Liberty pins as a symbol of gratitude and respect. Through this experience, students learned the powerful message that “when you honor a hero, you become a hero,” reinforcing the idea that recognizing other contributions help inspire positive actions and character within themselves.

This year’s recipients that received the Helping Hands Hero Recognition are:

  • Daphne McClendon- Coosada Elementary School
  • Sybil Sanford- Eclectic Elementary
  • Amanda Hill- Holtville Elementary
  • Judge Ben Baxley & Nacole Baxley- Redland Elementary
  • Kelley Fuller- Wetumpka Elementary

“I am honored to be recognized by the staff and students of WES. This recognition represents far more than an individual achievement- it reflects a shared commitment among staff, students, and families to empower learners, advocate for one another, and strengthen our community through education and opportunity. I am deeply grateful to be surrounded by so many who share this same passion for serving others,” said Kelley Fuller.

The event along with the donation of Super Citizen teaching kits were all made possible by the Elmore County Community Alliance.

“Receiving the honor of being named a Super Citizen by the students at Redland Elementary is one of the highlights of my career,” said Judge Ben Baxley and Nacole Baxley. We are so grateful to have the privilege to serve our community.”
